Ratings & One Sentence Reviews of New Releases (Feb. 2020)
Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) - B
Colorful, brisk and filled with action, Birds of Prey is a fun, dark entry in the DC Comic Universe, though it may not be for all tastes.
Sonic the Hedgehog - C
Though it’s not as bad as you might think, the live-action version of the popular Sega video game is still pretty flimsy, and held together by an energetic, memorable Jim Carrey turn as the villain.
Downhill - C-
Downhill is an apt name for the lackluster, sour remake of “Force Majeur” that in spite of the comedic appeal of leads Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell, fails to capture the magic of the original.
Call of the Wild - C
Harrison Ford is suitably gruff, but this pricey take on the Jack London classic is undermined by excessive, cutesy CGI, including a fake St. Bernard/Collie mix as lead dog Buck.
The Invisible Man - B
This contemporary update of the H.G. Wells classic from “Saw” writer Leigh Whannell is lean, mean and scary, and while occasionally far-fetched, it’s bolstered by a terrific turn from “The Handmaid‘s Tale” actress Elisabeth Moss.
